Wild Pink Yonder - On the trail to a cure...

This is the most fun you'll have with your horse this summer!

YOUR MANITOBA HOSTS

Meet Pam Glover, the Manitoba "Trail Blazer"

Hello Manitoba! Welcome to the Wild Pink Yonder.

My name is Pam Glover. I live near Ste Anne, Manitoba.

In Feb. 2009 I lost my beautiful 37 year old stepdaughter to breast cancer. I was heartbroken and very, very angry. Why isn’t there a cure for this disease? Why are we still losing our young women? What can I do to honour my stepdaughter and help find a cure for breast cancer?

That summer I stumbled upon a site called Wild Pink Yonder. I read about Jane and about what she was doing and I got VERY excited! My first thought was, “We can do that here!” My second thought was, “I love riding my horse and I love horse people! If we can all get together and raise money, how much fun would that be!” So I sent off an email to Jane, honestly thinking I’d never hear a word back -- but it was worth a try. Well, I heard back! After many emails back and forth I finally got to meet Jane and her son, Rusty. They were interested in taking Wild Pink Yonder beyond Alberta and I was invited to sample what Wild Pink Yonder is all about. We worked together at The Mane Event in Red Deer and I helped ground crew on the trail in Alberta in the summer of 2009. At the end of the season, they wanted to know if I would be the “Wild Pink Yonder Trail Blazer” for Manitoba. Would I? I was thrilled to have the chance to make such a big difference in the fight against breast cancer!

So now, here we are, in the planning stages of bringing Wild Pink Yonder to Manitoba.

We will begin our inaugural ride, with Jane and Rusty along, in Morden, Manitoba on Sept 11, 2011. We will end up in beautiful Birds Hill Park on Oct. 1, 2011.

With your help we can RIDE BREAST CANCER INTO THE GROUND.

Please join Jane, Rusty and me on Manitoba’s PINK TRAIL in September 2011.

It’s going to be legendary!

Jane Hurl - The "Trail Boss", coming from Alberta

This whole equine event came into being because Jane Hurl got breast cancer in 2006.  As she likes to point out, "Breast cancer is not what a girl would do for a picnic", but it looks like she's got it licked (so far). However, the thing is, breast cancer is still a life sentence, because (so far) there is no cure. Jane would like to change that. How? The answer lies in research.

This ride is about raising the money that makes research possible.

This ride is Jane’s dream.

Rusty Hurl - "Event Manager", coming from Alberta

Our Vice Prez and Event Manager (and Jane’s son) is Rusty. It is on his shoulders that everything rides.  He manages Wild Pink Yonder at the national level and the Alberta ride from the ground level -- finding sponsors, setting up towns along the Alberta route, dealing with printers, making riders feel welcome on the trail and spelling off his mother who can’t drive the team for long periods because of the broken back she suffered in year one of this event.

We hope you’ll ride with us, starting Sept 10th.

All funds raised by Wild Pink Yonder
in Manitoba will stay in Manitoba
and be used for breast cancer research
as directed by CancerCare Manitoba!

In Alberta, we took an outrageously pink covered wagon and an entourage of outriders called The Hole in the Head Gang to 22 towns throughout central Alberta. Our purpose was (and still is) to raise money that will be used to fight breast cancer.

Riders came from far and wide to Ride Off Into the Wild Pink Yonder.

Towns along our route rose to the occasion, offering us a place to stay for the night and, in most cases, feeding our group.

We sweetened the pot for towns by incorporating a contest we call Pinkest Little Town in the West. It offers towns an opportunity to go wild (and pink) -- and potentially win a free country music concert. The winning town can throw open the doors for everyone in town or charge admission and use the money to, say, build a new playground. The concert is theirs to do with as they wish. Our winner also wins bragging rights in the form of town entrance signs that proclaim them to be The Pinkest Little Town in the West.

In many towns the breakfasts and suppers weren’t just for our riders. They were for locals too, and became part of the town’s fundraising strategy to win Pinkest Little Town in the West. This was particularly beneficial because it raised significant funds for our cause while still making our visit fun for everyone -- and it helped us keep our costs down so that we could write a larger cheque for breast cancer research, treatment and education.

We now extend the challenge to Manitoba towns to top the "pinkness" of Alberta's towns!!
